James M. Smith, 76, of 300 W. Lemon St., Lititz, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Moravian Manor. Born in Bethlehem, PA, on July 5, 1931, he was the son of the late Dr. Morris and Violet McCracken Smith. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Evans Smith and the late Marilyn Roth Smith. He was a teacher and basketball coach at Lebanon High School for 31 years. After his retirement, Jim was a substitute teacher for Manheim Central School District and coached women's basketball. He had also served as an assistant coach at Lebanon High School, and had coached women's basketball at Lebanon Valley College. In 2005, he was inducted into the Lebanon High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Jim was a 1954 graduate of Moravian College and was captain of the basketball team. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of VFW #23 in Lebanon, and the American Legion, Lititz. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Leola, where he was a past counsel president and member of the bell choir. He is survived by his 2 daughters, Lynda Smith Hoggan of Upland, CA, and Barbara A. Smith of Tarzana, CA. He was preceded in death by an infant son, James, and a brother, William. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Rd., Leola, at 11 AM. The family will visit with friends after the service. Private interment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family.
