Miller shabodeho@aol.com November 12, 2008, 1:22 am Published in the Lebanon Daily News on 10/29/2008 Spangler, Earl J. Earl J. Spangler, 85, of Hershey passed away on October 27, 2008. Mr. Spangler was born on December, 12, 1922, a son of the late Abner and Beulah Spangler of Campbelltown. He graduated from Hershey Junior College, and received a B.S. in business administration from Lebanon Valley College. He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy's amphibious force in the South Pacific, where he earned three battle stars and shared a commendation award with three shipmates for rescuing 21 sailors and marines swept overboard in a tumultuous sea. After World War II, he completed his education and joined Hershey Chocolate Company at a low entry level, and retired in 1984 as president of the company, and Board Director of Hershey Foods Corporation. During his tenure with Hershey, Earl was named Dean of the Confectionery Industry by the National Candy Wholesalers Association, received the Giant of the Industry Award from the California Association of Candy and Tobacco Distributors, and was a member of the distribution committee of the national Grocery Manufacturers Association. After retirement, Earl authored five "Little Blue Books," memoirs of his childhood roots in Campbelltown. Earl was past president and Paul Harris Fellow of Hershey Rotary Club, past chairman of the Dauphin County Hospital Authority, past member of the Board of Harrisburg Hospital, and past member of the Harrisburg Area Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Derry Presbyterian Church, the Brownstone Lodge No. 666 F&AM, Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Temple Shrine, and the Hershey Italian Lodge. A music lover all of his life, he served as choir director of the Campbelltown Evangelical United Brethren Church, sang in a number of choirs and barbershop quartets, and was a member of the SPEBSQSA. Earl is survived by his wife, Trudy (Reid) Spangler of Hershey; and two daughters, Stephanie Spangler, wife of Robert Shulman of Connecticut, and Susan Spangler, partner of Ted Cmarada of Maryland. He is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Dissinger of Campbelltown; a brother, Richard Spangler of Strasburg; two grandsons, Mark Shulman and James Shulman of New York; and three greatgranddaughters, Kaiulani, Camilla, and Emma Shulman. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey, Pa. The family will visit with friends after the service in the church's Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Abner C. and Earl J. Spangler Scholarship Fund of Lebanon Valley College, 101 N.
