She was married to the Reverend Melvin G. Sponsler Jr. for 51 wonderful years. Active in Christian work, Marilyn graduated from Shamokin High School in 1950 and Bob Jones University in 1955, with a major in sacred music. She began working as organist for Ash Grove-Clarks Grove churches in Paxinos, and also was the director of Child Evangelism with her own radio program for Northumberland County. Marilyn was part time on the faculty of the United Wesleyan College in Allentown, where she taught organ, piano, and choral conducting. She used her office skills over the years, working at Milton Hershey Estates, Hershey; the Moravian Music Foundation; the Energy Research Center at Lehigh University, both of Bethlehem; Alumax Corporation, Lancaster; and retired in 1997 from the Corporate Offices of the Catholic Health Initiative, Aston. A talented musician, Marilyn used her training in many of the churches that her husband, Mel, served. She was the organist and director of four choirs at Campelltown U.M. Church, and served as director of Music for the Mountville United Church of Christ, and also St. Paul's U.M. Church in Mountville. Even though Marilyn retired from music in 1990, she volunteered as the director of the JOY Singers, a 35-voice choir of retired people, while at Mount Hope U.M. Church in Aston. In 1998, she and her husband moved to Mount Joy and became members of Glossbrenner U.M. Church, Mount Joy, where she substituted as organist for several years. In addition to music, Marilyn enjoyed golf, tennis, and reading. Special times with her children, and grandchildren were cherished. During their retirement years, she and Mel enjoyed spending late fall and winters in Avon Park, Fla. Born in Irish Valley, she was the daughter of the late Reverend William F. and Florence Wagner Derk. In addition to her husband, Mel, Marilyn will be deeply missed by her four children, Timothy, married to Melanie Bryan Sponsler of Orlando, Fla., Tamara, married to Daniel Johnson, Mount Joy, Theodore Sponsler of Mountville, and Thomas, married to Sharon Buttemere of Budapest, Hungary; seven grandchildren, Sarah, Jenna, Luke, Mark, Andrew, Jessica, and Jordan; and a sister, Lois Heiser, Allentown.
