Strickler, 84, of Lebanon died December 25, 2008, at Cornwall Manor. He was born October 27, 1924, in Lebanon, son of the late Henry D. and Ida Mae Sealer Strickler. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church for all of his 84 years, having served twice on church council as president, and many committees. He retired form Bell Telephone of Pa. as a cable spicer, linesman and outside plant engineer. George served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the 4th Marine Division during World War II, achieving the rank of sergeant. He saw combat in Saipan, Roi Namor, Kwajalein, and Marshall Islands. He was in the first wave to land on Iwo Jima in Feb. 19, 1945, and was awarded the Bronze Star for his action on Feb. 28, 1945. He was a member of the Lebanon City School Board; was president during the high school construction. He served on the board of RSVP, and member of Lebanon County Historical Society, volunteer at Hershey Ronald McDonald House, and a diehard Philadelphia Phillies fan. His hobbies included building miniature historical replicas of local buildings, and dearly loved the annual family reunions at Ocean City, N.J., for over 50 years. Surviving are his wife of 11 years, Lewette P. Strickler of Cornwall; children David Bechtel Strickler, spouse of Rita of Williamsport, and Ann Strickler Boyer, spouse of Keith of Pittsburgh; sisters Ruth Cohen of Lebanon and Margaret Bowie of Temple Hills, Maryland; grandchildren Allison Strickler, Andrew Strickler, Michael Boyer and Christopher Boyer; and step-children Susan Ciranni, Steven Flick, Donna Smith and Hugh Flick. He was preceded in death by wife of 47 years, Marie Bechtel, in 1992. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, December 29, 2008, from 10-11 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 28 N. Ninth St., Lebanon, followed by services at 11 a.m. in the church. Burial will be at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Memorials can be sent to Ronald McDonald House, 745 Governor Road, Hershey, PA 17033.
