Miller shabodeho@aol.com November 12, 2008, 1:10 am Published in the Lebanon Daily News on 10/28/2008 Thomas, Joanne L. Joanne L. Thomas, beloved sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 25, 2008, with family by her bedside, after her battle with cancer. Joanne was born on September 11, 1935, in Lebanon, Pa., daughter of the late George L. and Mary Hartman Thomas, and the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter Thomas, all of Lebanon. She was a graduate of Lebanon High School and West Chester State Teacher's College. Joanne had a wonderful career as an elementary school teacher for nearly 35 years in the Wilmington, Del., area, and had been awarded "Teacher of the Year" numerous times. She loved her students, many of whom remained in her life for many, many years, as she had been an inspiration to them. Her biggest loves were family, friends, jazz and travel. She was involved for many years with the Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz Society, which she co-chaired, and was instrumental in finding new talent for the program. She was recently inducted into the Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz Hall of Fame. Her love and appreciation of jazz was something learned from her late father, who was a brilliant jazz guitarist and composer. In any city, all over the world, Joanne could be found at the best jazz clubs, enjoying the local talent. She was a devoted and loving friend with a wonderful sense of humor and sheer enjoyment of things around her, which was infectious drawing people close to her, as evidenced by her extensive roster of friends everywhere. Joanne is survived by her brother, G. David Thomas of Lebanon; sister Sharon Thomas Mittelman of San Diego; and her nieces, Mikayla, Kylee and Ariel Mittelman of San Diego; as well as many, many loving friends. A service will be held Friday, October 31, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. in the Rohland Funeral Home Inc., Fifth and Cumberland streets, Lebanon. Followed by a short graveside service in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Lebanon Country Club following the interment. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Central Pa. Friends of Jazz, 5721 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg 17112; or Compassionate Care Hospice, 100 Brown St., Suite 23, Middletown 17057. She will be greatly missed by all.
