Miller shabodeho@aol.com September 14, 2008, 11:48 am Published in the Lebanon Daily News on 09/07/08 Yaklowich, Joseph Francis "Pappy Joe" Pearl Harbor survivor Joseph Francis "Pappy Joe" Yaklowich, 87, of Laureldale died September 3, 2008, in ManorCare, Muhlenberg Township. Born March 27, 1921, in Reading, he was a son of the late James and Katerina (Tezak) Yaklowich. Joseph was a graduate of Muhlenberg High School. He was a member of Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church, Laureldale. Joe worked for 30 years in the maintenance and construction departments at Western Electric/AT&T in Muhlenberg Township, retiring in 1984. He served as president of Local 1898 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for six years. Joe loved hunting, fishing, gardening, dancing and spending time with his family and friends. He played Santa for sixty years for the children of family and friends. Joe joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, Minoqua, Wisconsin in 1938, and served two years. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Upon completion of his training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, he selected to serve on the battleship USS Pennsylvania. He was aboard the USS Pennsylvania when it was attacked at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Nine months later he volunteered for the submarine service. After graduating from Sub and Diesel School in New London, Connecticut, he commissioned to the USS Cero, completing five patrols, and later commissioned to the USS Dentuda, completing one patrol before the war ended. He was discharged March 5, 1946. Joe spent his retirement years committed to making sure the younger generations learn about the sacrifices made by men and women during World War II. He, along with other World War II veterans, have visited schools, civic organizations, senior centers, etc., to share their experiences and the tragedy of Pearl Harbor. To honor the memory and service of those who did not make it home from the war, he has donated and presented a four volume set of U.S. Submarine World War II history books to 20 high school libraries in Berks County. He was a life member of Pearl Harbor Survivors of Berks County; life member of U.S. Navy Club of Reading Ship 258; life member of U.S. Submarine Veterans World War II, Red Rose Chapter, Lancaster; life member of World War II Memorial; U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc. Reading Base; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Black Diamond Navy Club, Ship 257, Minersville; and past president of Lehigh Valley Pocono Chapter of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. Surviving are four daughters, Judy, wife of Joseph Tamashasky of New Philadelphia, Schuylkill County, JoAnn, wife of Glenn Hillegass of Oley, Janice, wife of Dana Heck of Draper, Utah, and Jolene, wife of Dale Moser of Bernville. Other survivors include his friend and companion, Dorothy Smith; three grandchildren, Troy Hillegass, Jedd Hillegass and Lindsay Dunlap; and three greatgrandchildren, Nolan and Paden Hillegass and Sophia Dunlap. Joseph was predeceased by former wife Ethel C. (Zerbe) Yaklowich; a son, John Michael Yaklowich; and six siblings, Catherine Gruber, Mary Lloyd, Anthony, John, James and Martin Yaklowich. Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in Calvary Lutheran Church, 1009 Elizabeth Avenue, Laureldale, with the Rev. Grant A. Wickert officiating. A viewing will be held Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. in the Walter R. Christ Funeral Home Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. Burial with military honors will be in Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church, 1009 Elizabeth Ave., Laureldale, PA 19605; and/or Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, One Intrepid Square, West 46th Street and 12th Ave., New York, NY 10036.
