Gardner Yantis, 79, of Lower Paxton Township passed away Saturday, October 25, 2008, in the Harrisburg Hospital. Born in Harrisburg on December 18, 1928, she was the daughter of Ralph and Mabel Swartz Gardner. Merle retired from the Pennsylvania State Senate and, prior to that, worked for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. She was a 1946 graduate of the former Lower Paxton Township High School. Merle was a volunteer for the Tri-County Association for the Blind, Harrisburg. She loved being with her family and friends, helping people, and spending time at the beach in Ocean City, N.J. She also enjoyed shopping and dancing. Merle was preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Ben" Yantis, on March 30, 1991; and by her daughter, Deborah L. Warble, on January 23, 1982. Merle is survived by one son, Scott D. Deal, husband of Pam of Hummelstown; two daughters, Suzanne M. Stuck, wife of Kenneth R. of Linglestown, and Stephanie A. Gourley, wife of Ron J. of Hershey; six grandchildren, Melissa Fullerton, wife of Ike of Hummelstown, and David Deal, husband of Jamie of Conewago Township, Brandon Stuck, husband of Joanna of West Hanover Township, Ryan Stuck and Trevor Stuck, both of Linglestown, and Lindsay Hitz of Hershey; and four greatgrandchildren, Madison Deal and Tytan Deal, both of Conewago Township, and Samantha Fullerton and Makayla Fullerton, both of Hummelstown. A service of celebrating her life will be held on Friday, October 31, 2008, at 11:30 a.m. in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown. Inurnment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens at the convenience of her family. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home for a viewing Friday from 10 a.m. until time of the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the TriCounty Association for the Blind, 1800 North Second Street, Harrisburg, PA 17102; or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 717 Market Street, Suite 108, Lemoyne, PA 17043.
