"Betty Ann" (Cassel) Elizabeth A. "Betty Ann" Adams Elizabeth A. "Betty Ann" Cassel Adams, 83, of 3470 Oak St., Lebanon, formerly of Suedberg, died Monday, March 9, 2009, at Ephrata Community Hospital after prolonged illness. Born in Norristown, Pa., March 4, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Margaret A. Felty Cassel. A 1944 graduate of Pine Grove High School, she completed secretarial studies at Central Pennsylvania Business College, Harrisburg. A homemaker since her marriage, October 2, 1948, she was involved in music activities at Suedberg Church of God, of which she was a lifelong member, serving as Sunday school pianist or church organist for more than 65 years. Beginning in the mid1950s, she organized a junior choir, assisted with junior church music, taught Sunday school and vacation bible school, and participated in fundraising for the church by making sticky buns and fastnachts. In retirement, after a brief career as a teacher's aide in the Pine Grove area schools, Betty Ann volunteered for more than 15 years with the American Cancer Society, transporting patients for therapy, doing administrative work in the district office, and delivering daffodils. Subsequently, until declining health prompted her withdrawal, she served as a volunteer at the Hyman Caplan Pavilion of the Good Samaritan Hospital for several years. Along with her husband, she enjoyed extensive travel throughout the United States and abroad. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Norman; her maternal grandparents, Jacob and Sallie Miller Felty, in whose home she was raised; aunts, uncles, and cousins. Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Carl H. Adams; a daughter, Jane, wife of Edward W. Shirk of Ephrata; a son, John Adams of Raleigh, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Ryan E. Shirk and his wife, Amanda, and Rebecca J. Haken and her husband, Bill; a sister-in-law, Hilda C. Felty; her dearest friend, "sister" Anna Bohr; cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family plans a celebration of her life, conducted by Pastor Terrence Jansma, at 11 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2009, at Suedberg Church of God, 11 Old Forge Road, Pine Grove, PA 17963, with visitation preceding at the church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in the Church of God Cemetery. Flowers are welcome; however, the family requests memorials be designated for the Suedberg Church of God Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 106, Pine Grove, PA 17963; or Hospice of Lancaster County, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125. The H.L. Snyder Funeral Home, Pine Grove, is in charge of arrangements. Betty Ann's family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the medical and support staff of Ephrata Community Hospital for their constant, compassionate care; to Hospice of Lancaster County for allowing our loved one to depart in peace and comfort; and to the many dear family, friends, and clergy for their love, support, and prayerful visits.
