Cole Alexander departed this life on Monday, September 28, 2009, after a long battle with cancer and other health issues. She had returned to Kentucky after many years of living in various states, most recently in Hummelstown and Lebanon, Pa. Mary retired from the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lebanon after 18 years of service. She was preceded in death by her parents, Price Cole and Oma Spencer Cole of Lebanon, Ohio; a brother, Eddie, of Franklin, Ohio; and a nephew, Dale Helton of Franklin, Ohio. Mary was the widow of The Honorable Mayor Marion "Brud" Alexander of Hummelstown. They were very active in the community serving on the Hummelstown Civic Association, participating on the Hummelstown Crime Watch and the National Night Out, leading the Pet Parade for the Hummelstown Business and Professional Association, and enjoying riding in the Halloween Parade throwing candy to the children, just to name a few. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hummelstown. Upon the death of her beloved husband, Mary served as Mayor of Hummelstown for the remainder of his term. She leaves behind four children, son Doug (Terri) VanHoose of North Middletown, Ky., daughter, Kimberli (Larry) Davis of Mt. Sterling, Ky., son, Timothy VanHoose of Lexington, Ky., and daughter, Pamela (David) Wagoner of Paris, Ky.; 12 grandchildren, Christy, Beth Ann, Caleb, Lucas, Caden, Corey and his wife, Robbie, Shannon and her husband, Ross, Jessi, Cooper, Lindy, Zac and Haylie; and eight great-grandchildren, Amity, Brandon, Kylie, Kaylynn, Eli, Ashby, Walker and Austin. Mary had a great love and compassion for people of all ages and walks of life. She loved to laugh, pull jokes on people, and tell stories. Mary enjoyed playing bingo, working in her flower garden, and collecting butterflies. She enjoyed nature and quiet evenings outside listening to night sounds. She adored her two dogs, Teddy and T.T., who remained by her side. Throughout her latter years, though filled with the loss of many loved ones, and the trials of living with cancer, Mary remained cheerful, inspiring many others along the way to hold tight to their faith in our living God, knowing He has a plan for each of us and each will be fulfilled. Friends and relatives are invited to the viewing Tuesday, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 W. Main St., Hummelstown.
