Born in Lebanon County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William and Florence Kauffman. She was a graduate of Lebanon High School, Class of 1951. Miriam is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Gerald H. of Hershey; two sons, Scott and wife Robyn of Boca Raton, Fla., Gregory and wife Shelly of Hanover, Pa.; two daughters, Marcia, wife of Joseph Reed of Lancaster, Pa., Sally, wife of Van Neher of Pittsburgh, Pa.; aunt Mary Clagett of Madison, Wis.; sister Margaret Heberling of Cornwall, Pa.; two brothers, Leon Kauffman of Cornwall, Pa., Leroy Kauffman of Lebanon, Pa. She will be sadly missed by her 10 grandchildren, who fondly called her, "Meme," Chad Bean, Jordan Bean, Michael Bean, Kylie Bean, Parker Bean, Trevor Bean, Joseph Reed, Rose Neher, Paige Neher, and William Neher. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Hershey. She served on the pastor parish relations committee for four years. She was involved in the Stephen Ministry Program, as well as participating in a church circle, where she knitted hats and sewed cool ties for our troops serving abroad. Miriam also mentored young members of the church preparing for confirmation. She enjoyed serving as a 4-H sewing leader for many years, as well as sewing for her family. She was an avid knitter, specializing in woolen afghans, scarves and mittens. She enjoyed cooking any time of the day. Miriam retired from Hershey Medical Center in 1996, after 18 years as a secretary in the dermatology department. In her later years, she enjoyed working as a volunteer at Hershey Medical Center, working in the gift shop and delivering mail to patients. Her passion for working with people extended over into employment at the American Music Theatre and Hersheypark. Miriam and Gerald enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, including many trips to see the progress of their adored grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 14th, at 11 a.m. in her church located at 64 West Chocolate Avenue, Hershey. Relatives and friends will be received at the church from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Penn State Lung Cancer Research University Development, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Box 852, Hershey, PA 17033; First United Methodist Church of HersheyOrgan Fund, 64 West Chocolate Avenue, Hershey, PA 17033.
