Blankley passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, in Los Angeles, Calif., with Shirley Kelly, his partner of 20 years, and his nephew, Gary Shenk, by is side. He was fighting cancer along with other complications. He was born in Williamsport, on August 6, 1930, to Russell and Muriel Blankley. He moved with his family to Alexandria, Va., in 1942. He graduated from George Washington High School in 1949. David served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. He resided in Springfield, Va., until 1980 with his wife Bettie, when they relocated to Delray Beach, Fla. He was a founding member of the Northern Virginia Senior Softball in 1980. During his time with that organization he was inducted into the Washington, D.C. Area Senior Softball Hall of Fame. He was an avid sportsman, participating in baseball, softball, and tennis, as well as being a bicyclist and motorcycle enthusiast. He was a compassionate person and a gentleman in every sense of the word. He was predeceased by his father, mother, and wife. He leaves his nephew, Gary Shenk; his nephew, Phillip Shenk and his family, and his niece, Joy Behney and her family, all from Pennsylvania; and his loving partner, Shirley Kelly of Boca Raton, Fla. He will be laid to rest on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Hershey Cemetery, Hershey. The funeral procession will depart from Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 W. Pine St., Palmyra, PA 17078 at 12:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Save the Manatee, 500 N. Maitland Ave., Maitland, FL 32751; National Wildlife Federation, 11100 Wildlife Center Drive, Reston, VA 20190; or to Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary & Hospital, 185 E.
