William A. Bowman, 73, of Lower Paxton Township, and formerly of Lansdale, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at Harrisburg Hospital on Saturday, January 3, 2009. Born in Palmyra, Pa., he was the son of the late Walter K. and Pauline Asper Bowman, and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Walter K. Jr. and Kenneth R. William was a member of Charlton United Methodist Church. He retired from Merck and Co. of West Point, Pa., in 1990, where he was the supervisor of biological quality control, and then owned and operated S.A. Wentling's Optic Co. He was a member of Robert Burns Lodge 464, F.&A.M., Capitol Area Scottish Rite, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Forest 43, the Zembo Usher's Unit, and was a life member of the original 1000 YD. Benchrest Club Inc. He had many hobbies, including building and operating HAM radios, traveling with his wife around the United States in their motor home, was a Civil War and birdwatching enthusiast, and enjoyed flying his Cessna Cardinal, but most of all, enjoyed his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Virginia M. (Thomas) Bowman; four daughters, Deb K. O'Neill and her husband, Thomas of Lansdale, Barbara B. Knous and her husband, Jeffrey of Harrisburg, Laura J. Snyder and her husband, Jeffrey of Columbia and Brenda L. Wundschock and her husband, Detlev of Perkasie; two sisters, Ruth Mumaw of Elizabethtown and Joann Demming of Lancaster; and 12 grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at 12:30 p.m. at Hoover Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc., 6011 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg. The Rev. Suanne Whorl, his pastor; and the Rev. Jeffrey A. Snyder, his son-in-law, will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. The family will receive friends from noon until time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Charlton United Methodist Church, 5920 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17112.
