Bruntel, 88, died Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at Cedar Haven Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Agnes T. Ondrejiscka Bruntel. Herbert was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on December 17, 1920. He was the son of the late Jacob and Bertha Shoenfeld Bruntel. His family moved to Far Rockway, N.Y., where he was raised. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps prior to his enlistment in the U.S. Army in 1942. Until his discharge in 1946, he served in Italy, France, and Germany with the 202nd General Hospital. Prior to shipping overseas, he served at Fort Indiantown Gap where he met Agnes Ondrejiscka, who later became his bride, and led him to settle in Lebanon. Post discharge from the Army in 1946, he was employed briefly at Bethlehem Steel Company. He became the Food Service Manager at the VA Hospital in 1947, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. He was active in the Lebanon Industrial Management Club and served as President from 1969 to 1970. He was also an active member of the Polka Pals of Lebanon and served as their president for several years. He was a member of the VFW, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and B'nai B'rith International. He enjoyed gardening, volunteering at the former St. Cyril & Methodius Church and volunteering for Christian Ministries, where he performed as a bag lady and a tramp. Surviving are a daughter, Bertha (Bonnie), wife of Jospeh Stupak of Lebanon; two sons, Thomas Bruntel of Lebanon, and Herbert E. Jr., husband of Frances E. Bruntel of Lebanon; grandchildren, Melissa, wife of Todd Moore of Lebanon, Dr. Matthew H., husband of Brittany Bruntel of Middletown, Md., and Andrew J. Bruntel, Los Angeles, Calif.; and two great-grandsons, T.J. and Trevor Moore. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rhoda Welker. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. from Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 126 S. 9th St., Lebanon. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. Viewing hours Saturday morning 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Best Little Cat House in PA, P.O. Box 6346, Harrisburg, PA 17112.
