Criswell HARRISBURG John Taylor Criswell died Sunday, November 22, 2009, less than 6 weeks shy of his 100th birthday. Born in Hitchens, Ky., on December 31, 1909, he was one of six children of the late Ethel and Herbert Criswell. John came to Pennsylvania in 1945 and resided in Palmyra. In 2007 he moved to Homeland Center in Harrisburg. The beloved father of Betty C. Hungerford, wife of Paul Hungerford, he also is survived by his sister, Isabelle Haeberlin of Mansfield, Ohio. He was grandfather to Deborah, David and Christopher Duke who endeared their 'Grandpa Criswell' to them with the moniker 'GPC'. He had eight greatgrandchildren, a great-greatgrandson, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers; and his cherished grandson, J.T. Duke II. Mr. Criswell attended Carter County (KY) public schools and Kentucky Christian College. He was a master shoemaker employed in shoe manufacturing for more than 55 years with W.L. Kreider Shoe Co. In 1988, he retired at age 79. He was a respected supervisor who demanded excellence of his employees. A humble man, John did claim a measure of pride in having personally finished many of the shoes worn by President Kennedy's children in the White House, Caroline and John. He attended the Palmyra Church of the Brethren where he taught the Men's Bible Class for more than 40 years though ever a loyal man, John remained a lifelong member of the First Christian Church of Vanceburg, Ky. He filled his leisure hours tending and photographing his beautifully grown roses and chronicling his travels of the countryside and ventures west. He was a life member of Polar Star Lodge, F & A Masons, the Grand Lodge of Kentucky F & A.M., The Scottish Rite Valley of Harrisburg and Zembo Shrine, A.A.O.N.M.S., Harrisburg. Following their private Memorial service, the family welcomes friends to join them Monday, November 30, 2009, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Rita Corish Patterson Solarium at Homeland Center. Arrangements by HetrickBitner Funeral Home, 3125 Walnut St., Harrisburg. With the utmost gratitude and respect, the family wishes to acknowledge the entire staff of Homeland Center for the exemplary and loving care they provided to "Daddy", "John, "GPC." They are particularly appreciative of the comfort and dignity added to his life by the Homeland Hospice team. In recognition of their care for him and in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Homeland Center Hospice, Homeland Center, 1901 N. Fifth St. Harrisburg, PA 17102-1598.
