Raymond R. Curanzy, M.D., of Palmyra, Pa., age 86, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at his home. He was the husband of Helen Pelesky Curanzy, and they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary last May. Born September 7, 1922, in Melcroft, Pa., he was the son of Sadie and John Curanzy. Dr. Curanzy graduated from Conemaugh Township High School in 1939, started at Juniata University with a scholarship, left college in 1941 for service in World War II, returned and graduated in 1947. During the war, Dr. Curanzy went to the University of Panama to learn surveying and Spanish, and led a team to survey the United States owned territorial boundaries of the canal. He studied chemical engineering as an undergraduate, and entered medical school at the University of Maryland, and graduated in 1951. He met his wife, Helen, who was in nurse's training at Conemaugh Hospital, where he was a junior intern and finished his internship at Reading Hospital. Dr. Curanzy moved to Palmyra and started his general practice in 1952, and ended the practice in 1994. He was very active in his service to the medical profession, professional associations, and the community with the following showing: staff for Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon 19521970; staff for Hershey Hospital, 1952-1970; Diplomat American Board of Psychosomatic Medicine, 1960-1971; chief of staff, Hershey Hospital, 1963-1968; president of Pennsylvania American Heart Association, 1966; served as president of the Palmyra Board of Health for many years; editor of Lebanon County Medical Bulletin, 1965-1970; Distinguished Service Award for Pennsylvania American Heart Association, 1966; faculty of M.S. Hershey Medical Center, 19671987; charter diplomat of American Board of Family Practice, 19711992; American Academy Family Practice, 1961-1993; Distinguished Achievement Award American Heart Association, 1979 and member AMA, Lebanon Medical Society and Pennsylvania State Medical Society. Dr. Curanzy was recognized as a leader by the Louise Von Hess Foundation to travel, study and report on the national health programs of France, England, Spain and Portugal in 1991. Governor Shapp appointed him as chairman to establish coronary care units in all Pennsylvania hospitals. He was president of the Palmyra Area School Board from 1967 to 1980, and Palmyra H.S. was recognized as one of the top 10 high schools in Pennsylvania in 1980. Dr. Curanzy was also a member of the Mount Nittany Society. Dr. Curanzy's major hobby was golf, and he was a member of the Hershey Country Club. He was also a plantsman and president of the Pennsylvania Nut Growers Association, receiving awards for nuts grown on his farm in Annville, Pa. His other interests and hobbies were anthropology and human origins, biblical archaeology and history. He belonged to the Biblical Archaeology Society since 1996. He attended classes at U of Penn for anthropology after his retirement from medicine. Dr. Curanzy and his wife, Helen, traveled extensively visiting far flung places such as Egypt, Russia, Iran and Uzbekistan. At the start of his medical practice, he made house calls. One memorable call was to a home where the caller paid "Doc" his house call fee of $10 for a ride into town, since that was cheaper than a taxi fee. Dr. Curanzy liked to recount the nonmonetary payments for his house calls paid in huckleberries, dandelion wine, ham and chow chow. When in the Reading area as an intern, Dr. Curanzy unknowingly was assigned for a few weeks of call duty at the Berks County Penn Sylvan Health Society, which was a nudist camp and complimented his anatomy studies. With his background in chemistry, he made some medications for his patients to save them costs. His competency and experience allowed him to look out for the interest of his patients and he performed procedures in his office that most doctors today refer to a specialist. Dr. Curanzy is survived by his wife, Helen; his son, Raymond R. Curanzy Jr., and his wife, Michelle (Celaya) of Annville, Pa.; his daughter, Donna Curanzy-Seltzer, and her husband, Craig H.
