Fertig NORTH CHARLESTON, SC Mr. Charles Allen Fertig, affectionately known as 'Skip', 73, husband of Patricia A. Fertig, passed away in the early morning hours on Saturday, December 19, 2009, at Summerville Medical Center. Friends and family of Mr. Fertig are invited to attend his funeral service on Sunday, December 27, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC 29406. Burial will immediately follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family of Mr. Fertig will be receiving guests at the funeral home Saturday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. and again on Sunday afternoon from 2 p.m. until the time of service at 3 p.m. Mr. Charles 'Skip' Allen Fertig was born on May 16, 1936, in Lebanon, to the late Charles W. Fertig and the late Catherine Albright Fertig. He was a retired Vietnam Veteran of the United States Navy, proudly serving his country for over 30 years. For many years, Mr. Fertig was a baseball and softball coach at Hunley Park in North Charleston, and because he loved sports so much, he also was a referee for football, baseball, and softball for local high schools and colleges. He also enjoyed bowling and could be found bowling on Monday mornings at Sandpiper Lanes in North Charleston. Mr. Fertig was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in North Charleston. He will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Mrs. Patricia Ann Matterness of North Charleston, S.C.; two sons, Kenneth C. Fertig (Darlene) of Bonneau, S.C., and David B. Fertig (Chiquita), U.S. Army currently stationed in Germany; five grandchildren, Katie, Kristen, and Kyle Fertig, and Marquise Thomas and Mikala Harris; and his loving four legged companion, Cocoa. Flowers will be accepted at the funeral home or memorial contributions can be made in Mr. Charles A. 'Skip' Fertig's name to Peace Lutheran Church, 8315 Dorchester Road, North Charleston, SC 29418.
