Harry G. Gamble Harry G. Gamble Jr., 85, of 608 Raspberry Lane, Lebanon, died Thursday, July 16, 2009 at his home. He was born October 18, 1923 to the late Harry and Alverta Weik Gamble in N. Cornwall Twp. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of World War II. He was awarded Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star and Purple Heart. He was a time clerk for Bethlehem Steel Corp. He was involved in numerous important roles in the military during WWII. He was a member of the 3rd Army Rangers, detonating land mines and destroying the German infrastructure in Nazi-occupied France. He served under Gen. George S. Patton and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart and Silver Star. He was a Private First Class in the United States Army where on October 22, 1944, during action near Moncourt Woods, France, his company, was pinned down by intense enemy machine gun fire. With utter disregard for his own safety he volunteered to silence the weapon and fearlessly advanced alone, armed only with a demolition charge. He skillfully maneuvered to within a few feet of the, enemy emplacement and lit the charge and threw it into the machine gun position, destroying the gun and killing the crew of six. His heroic, dauntless actions and unflinching devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military, service. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a life member of Military Order of the Purple Heart and member of Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club. He also enjoyed creating deer wood crafts and playing Santa Claus. He sang in the church choir and was a good father. He liked watching the Atlanta Braves and Penn State Football. Surviving is wife of 61 years Doris Klepper Gamble, Lebanon; son Harry G., III spouse of Martha Gamble of Lebanon; brothers Kerry Gamble and Stuart Gamble; grandchildren Jason N. spouse of Marianne Gamble of Lebanon and Shannon E. Gamble of Hershey. He is preceded in death by sister Shirley Cramer. Viewing is scheduled for Monday, July 20, 2009, from 10-11AM at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Lebanon. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 20, 2009, at 11AM at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Lebanon. Burial will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
