Walter H. Gingrich, age 80, of Palmyra died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at the M.S. Hershey Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Fay E. (Speece) Gingrich, who died December 20, 2002. He was born on July 27, 1928, in Palmyra to J. Russell and Theresa Houtz Gingrich. He retired in 1986 after 34 years as a sales engineer for Johnson Controls, Camp Hill. He was a life long member of the First United Methodist Church, Palmyra, where he received the United Methodist Order of the Cross. He taught Sunday school and was a head usher. He was a former member of the Palmyra Jay Cee's and Toast Masters. He served on the Palmyra Recreation Council, the Borough Planning & Zoning Commission and the Palmyra Area School Board for two terms. He was grand marshall of the Palmyra Holiday Parade for several years. He enjoyed reading, especially electronics and studying the bible. He loved Swing and Big Band music and riding roller coasters. He was especially proud of his two grandchildren performing in Drum & Bugle Corps. Surviving him are his daughters, Wendy G., wife of Joseph Zearfoss of Westminster, Md., and Cindy A. Gingrich, wife of Richard Baker of Boylston, Mass.; his grandchildren, Patrick W. Zearfoss and Sharon A. Zearfoss, both of Westminster, Md.; his sister-in-law, Geneva Gingrich of Palmyra, wife of the late Kenneth Gingrich; nephews Kenneth Gingrich Jr. of Lansdale, Kerry Gingrich of Houston, Texas, Steven Gingrich of Palmyra; his niece, Laura Gingrich of Palmyra; his great-niece, Julie; and great-nephew Jeffrey. Relatives and friends are invited for a time of viewing Monday, April 13, 2009, from 6-8 p.m. at the Rothermel Funeral Home Inc., 25 W. Pine St., Palmyra, and on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, from 9-10 a.m., followed by his funeral service at 10 with the Rev. Samuel Fry and the Rev. Thomas Yackley officiating. Burial will follow in the Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, 1200 Grubb Road, Palmyra PA 17078.
