James C. Hayes, 89 - a resident of Lebanon Valley Home in Annville, Pa., - went home to be with his heavenly Father on February 27, 2009. Born July 28, 1919, in the Tacony section of Philadelphia, he was the son of the late William M. and Ida (Hawthorne) Hayes. After graduating from Frankford High School in Philadelphia, he attended The Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania, and later graduated from Temple University. Mr. Hayes was World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army in both the European and South Pacific theaters, and retired from the Army Reserves as a major. After his military service, Mr. Hayes began a career in construction which led to a position with the joint apprenticeship committee in Philadelphia, where he taught apprentice carpenters. He was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Hatboro, Pa., where he served on the stewardship committee, church council, and was a member of the choir. He and his wife, Dorothy, relocated to the Hershey-Palmyra area in 1989. As a member of the First United Methodist Church in Palmyra, he served as a teacher in the Bible Discussion Group. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Ell) Hayes; daughters Judy Snyder (husband Dave) and Barbara Bach (husband Curt); son David Hayes (wife Denise); grandchildren Stephanie and Justin Bach, and Taylor, David, and Jenna Hayes. He was predeceased by a son, James C. Hayes Jr. A private internment will be at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. A memorial is planned for March 21 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Birch and Green streets, Palmyra, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the church's Benevolence Fund.
