She was the loving wife of the late Joseph G. Hermansky, who died in 1983. Berny was born in Lebanon on November 11, 1919, and was the daughter of the late Anthony S. Matula and Mary B. Matula, nee Ondrejicka, who died within a year of each other, when Berny was a child. She subsequently was raised and educated by the Slovak Sisters at the Jednota Home and Immaculate Conception School for orphaned children in Middletown, Pa. She later worked in the garment industry in Lebanon until her husband was discharged from the U.S. Army, following World War II. Berny was a devoted member of the Catholic faith, and a member of St. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, which later became St. Benedict The Abbot Catholic Church. She was an avid crotchetier, and enjoyed making gifts for family, friends, and for church fundraisers. Surviving are daughter Bernadine Shattls, wife of Frederick Shattls; a brother, Rudolph Matula of Spring Hill, Florida; a grandson, Joseph; and numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and cousins. She was preceded in death by a sister, Agnes Matula Weik; and granddaughter Audra. Funeral Mass Monday at 11 a.m. from St. Benedict The Abbot Catholic Church, 1300 Lehman St., Lebanon, PA 17046. There will be no viewing. Visitation Monday morning 10-11 at the church. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Benedict's Church. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Lebanon, is entrusted with arrangements.
