Freas W. Hontz Jr., 86 yrs., of Birdsboro, formerly of Morgantown, died surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the Lebanon VA Medical Center following an illness. He was born in Shickshinny, Pa., on December 24, 1923. He was the son of the late Freas W. Sr. & Josephine (Peters) Hontz. He was the husband of the late Norma P. (Fleming) Hontz, who died on August 2, 2002. Freas was a retired plumber who was selfemployed after working at the Grace Mines Plant in Morgantown for many years. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps and he earned a Purple Heart for battle wounds during the Korean War. He attended the Milton Hershey Industrial Boys School. He was active as an alumni member. He shared many stories with his family about the education and values that he learned from the time spent at the school. Pop Pop Freas looked forward to attending any sporting event that his beloved granddaughter, Jessica, took part in. He was also a softball coach in Morgantown at one time. He had a mountain cabin, where he enjoyed hunting and the time spent there enjoying nature. Freas was a member of the Morgantown United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Roy, Carl, Paul and Homer Hontz. Freas is survived by a son, Freas W. Hontz III of Ephrata; a daughter, Cindy and her husband, James Peppernick of Birdsboro; a granddaughter, Jessica Peppernick of Birdsboro; 3 brothers, Russell Hontz of Jonestown, Donald Hontz of Manheim and Freddie Hontz of Sunbury; 4 sisters, Inze Campbell, Naomi Hochenbrough and Arlene Knepp, all of Sunbury, and Lois Wood of Harrisburg. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at 11 AM from Morgantown U.M.C., Main & Walnut Streets, Morgantown, Pa., with Pastors Steve Hontz, Robert Pope and David Hertzler officiating. Interment will follow at the Caernarvon Cemetery. A calling hour will be held on Friday from 6 to 9 PM at The Labs Funeral Home Inc., 141 Pequea Ave., Honey Brook, Pa., and from 10 to 11 AM on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the memory of Freas to either the Hospice Care at the Lebanon VA Medical Center, 1700 S. Lincoln Ave., Lebanon, Pa. 17042 or the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 72123-1718.
