He was born November 29, 1921, to the late Joseph H. and Mazie Hertzler Layser in Richland. He was a member of Lebanon Church of the Brethren and served as deacon and was a Sunday school teacher. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a retired civil service worker of the Commonwealth of PA. He was a graduate of Lebanon Valley College. He was an Air Force Veteran of WWII, having served with the 20th Air Force in India and the Mariana Islands in the Pacific Arena. His lifetime hobby was the propagation of Fancy Show Pigeons. He spent 25 years promoting Pioneer seed corn on local farms. He spent his retirement years as a volunteer caretaker of the Meyer Cemetery in Greble. He is survived by his wife Verda E. (Gibbel) Layser, Palmyra, with whom he would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in October; sons Dr. Joseph D., spouse of Marjorie Layser of Newport News, Virginia, Andrew P., spouse of Julia Layser of Downingtown, David D., spouse of Cynthia Layser of Lebanon, Frederick Layser of San Antonio,Texas; daughter Candace, spouse of Richard Woods of Basking Ridge, NJ; brother Ray E. Layser of East Petersburg; sister Mazie Weaver of Richland; grandchildren James Layser, Anthony Layser, Michelle Layser, Robert Layser, Adrianne Layser, Derek Layser, Stephanie Layser, Desire Cortez, Jordan Woods, Megan Woods, Devin Layser; great-grandchild Jack Cortez. He was preceded in death by son William Ira Layser; sisters Blanch Eshelman, Clara Long, Florence Shanaman; brothers Alvin Layser, John Layser, Leonard Layser and Mark Layser. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 6, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Lebanon Church of the Brethren at 400 Locust Street, Lebanon, with viewing from 9-10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Meyer Cemetery on Monday.
