Long, 80, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2009. Born October 29, 1928, in Lebanon, he was the son of the late Henry F. and Frances (Horst) Long. Joseph attended Hershey Public School and then Hershey Junior College for two years. A 1949 graduate of Elizabethtown College, he served the mission church in Knoxville during the summer of 1952 and attended Bethany Theological Seminary until 1953. He was a member of the Seagoing Cowboys from May to July 1946, which dealt with the delivery of animals and cattle to Poland. Serving as Pastor of the Chambersburg Church of the Brethren until 1959, he was Director of National Youth for the Church of the Brethren until 1963 and the District of Eastern – Executive until he retired. He was Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Board of Probation and Parole for 20 years and volunteered for Contact Harrisburg for 35 years. Surviving are his wife, Shirley; son, Timothy J. Long and wife, Lorrie of Palmyra; daughter, Patti Schylaski and husband, Kurt of Halifax; stepdaughters, Leslie Hess and husband, Brian of Annville, and Kelly Ross and husband, Michael of Hershey; grandchildren, Josh, Ben, Greta, Parker, and Jenna; great- grandchild, Ryder; and stepgrandchildren, Megan, Michael, Sam, Olivia, and Delaney. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 30, 2009, at the Ridgeway Community Church of the Brethren, 525 N. Progress Ave., Harrisburg, preceded by a visitation from 1 p.m. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Spring Creek Cemetery, Hershey. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Pennsylvania, 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
