He was born May 31, 1927, to James Robert Sr. and Esther Anne Humphrey Marshall at Harriston, Va. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended Augusta County schools and was a former employee of Pepsi Cola Bottling Co., Shop & Save Supermarket and Kroger. He was a founding and active member of Central Point Christian Church, having served as treasurer for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Lucy Christine Morris, Gladys Marie Blackwell, Virginia Sophia Marshall; two brothers, James Robert Marshall Jr., Fulton Marshall; two nieces; and one nephew. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Violet Fisher Marshall of the home; two sons, Seth Bailey Marshall of Missoula, Montana, and Major Lane Burton Marshall, serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq, and his wife, Tammy, and their sons, Tyler Lane and Kaleb Burton Marshall of Lebanon, Pa.; five sisters, Lillian Morris of Grottoes, Hazel Massie, Jeraline Eavers, both of Waynesboro, Judith Fisher of Broadway, Ruth Simons and her husband, Jim of New Bern, N.C.; and one brother, Jesse Thomas Marshall of Crimora, Va. He also leaves a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, April 23, 2009, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes with Minister James Joyner officiating. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Jay Marshall, Neal Marshall, Edward Marshall, Michael Morris, Barry Morris, Gary Massie, Tim Fisher and Kevin Morris. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Central Point Christian Church. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at the funeral home. Memorials can be made to the Daily Living Center, 990E Hopeman Parkway, Waynesboro, VA 22980. The Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes has been entrusted with the arrangements.
