Harry N. Matala, 88, of 29 Ridge Ave., Lebanon, died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Ruth A. Gollam Matala, who died in 1991. Born May 9, 1921, in Pottsville, PA, he was the son of the late Frank and Margaret Spirk Matala. He retired from Lebanon High School, where he started as a Physical Education teacher, and then later as the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director. He was a graduate of Lebanon Valley College and earned his master's degree from Penn State University. He was a member of the Annville American Legion, the Lebanon VFW, the Lebanon Valley Sports Hall of Fame, Lebanon Valley College Sports Hall of Fame, the Lebanon High School Sports Hall of Fame, and the Lebanon YMCA. He coached football, baseball, and basketball over the years. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Cecilia's Church. Surviving are 4 children: Peg Tanner of Grantville; Casey, wife of James Gettle of Lebanon; Susan, wife of Michael DeLong of Lebanon; Joe, husband of Karen Matala of Peachtree City, GA; and daughterin- law Linda McCulloch; 13 grandchildren; 7 greatgrandchildren; 1 brother: Albert Matala of Florida; 1 sister: Margaret Mattis of Middletown; nieces, nephews, and a special friend Janet Poorman. Preceded in death by a son Malcom McCulloch; 2 sisters: Mary Swicarz and Helen Mathias; 1 brother: Frank Matala; 1 grandson: Jason DeLong. Funeral Mass Tuesday at 11 a.m. from St. Cecilia's Church, 202 E. Lehman St., Lebanon, 17046. Interment at Mt. Annville Cemetery, Annville, PA. Viewing hours Monday evening 68 at Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 126 S. 9th St., Lebanon, and Tuesday morning 10-11 at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Hospital Hospice, 202 Hathaway Park, Lebanon, 17042 or to St. Cecilia's Church.
