John J. Matternas, 83, of Schaefferstown died of cancer Friday, January 16, at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. He was born February 24, 1925, in Pine Grove, the son of John Aaron William and Marie Rebecca (Ream) Matternas. He married Louise Umberger in 1948; she died in 1980. He married the former Elaine Honegger on December 21, 1980. She survives, along with children Harry Matternas, husband of Julie of Urbandale, Iowa, Kate Ginder of Schaefferstown, and Lena Matternas of Arlington, Va. Grandchildren - Steven Ginder of Richland, Cyrenne Ginder of Schaefferstown, Matthew and Maggie Matternas of Urbandale, Iowa; and a brother, Edward L. Matternas of Pine Grove. John graduated from Penn State University in 1948 with a degree in chemistry, and began a career in the insurance industry that spanned more than 60 years. He started as a salesman with Liberty Mutual and worked through various levels up to the home office of the company, then went on to acquire agencies in Pennsylvania, Maryland, D.C., and New Jersey. In 1991, he established Intercorp, an insurance program management firm headquartered in Ephrata. He was chairman of the company at the time of his death. A lifelong and ardent supporter of Penn State, he was active in several of its alumni groups, including the Lion's Paw Alumni Association and Skull & Bones Alumni Association, and he served on the alumni board of Alpha Chi Sigma, a processional chemistry and social organization. He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Schaefferstown, and had served on its church council. He was an avid gardener and woodworker. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. John was a people person, and could strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere, forging many friendships and relationships that lasted a lifetime. Throughout his long insurance career and his many college-related activities, he touched many lives with his wide range of interests, his sharp mind and his zest for living. At the time of his death, he was chairing a fundraising campaign for his fraternity, designed to provide scholarships and maintain the fraternity property. Thus, the family has established a scholarship in his name to assist young people at Penn State who are pursuing studies in chemistry and related fields. Memorial contributions may be made to Nu Chapter Alpha Chi Sigma Professional Society, 2160 Sandy Drive, Suite D, State College, PA 16803, designated for the John Matternas Scholarship Fund. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, at St. Luke Lutheran Church. Friends may call at the church beginning at noon. Clauser Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
