McGinty, 79, of Lebanon, passed away from complications from cancer on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at home and surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Philadelphia on December 1, 1929, daughter of the late John Mullany and Mary Heyburn Mullany, and one of seven children: John, Frank (deceased), Joseph, Bernard, Theresa and Patricia. Rita was a member of St. Mary's parish, where she was active for many years as an Eucharistic Minister, lector and CCD teacher. She also was an active member in the Cursillo Movement in the Diocese of Harrisburg. In addition to the church, Rita was an actress. She performed in over 30 shows at the Lebanon Community Theater as well as productions at Mt. Gretna Theater and the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg. She was best known for her portrayal of Mary Agnes, "the best bag lady in Pennsylvania." She performed over 1,100 shows in which all proceeds went to The Inter-faith Family Shelter in Harrisburg. She was honored by the Diocese of Harrisburg for her charitable contributions. Rita was also involved with the Literacy Council where she taught English as a second language. Her work received national acclaim and was awarded a citation by Barbara Bush. Rita will always be remembered for her ability to touch a person's heart as well as her uncanny sense of humor and her wonderful jokes. It has been said that if you are a friend of hers, your friends were her friends also. Rita is survived by her husband of 45 years, Michael J. McGinty, her children; Terrence J. Brown, husband of Aida Odchimar Brown, Michele Brown Boyer, wife of Stephan P. Boyer, and Timothy J. Brown, husband of Beth Hughes Brown; stepdaughter Gail Hawley, wife of Robert Hawley (deceased), stepson Michael McGinty Jr., husband of Gail Goodwin McGinty, stepdaughter Kathleen Sahasaylo, wife of Bohdan Sahasaylo, stepdaughter Linda Evans, wife of David Evans; 16 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren. She is preceded in death by her sons Joseph, Daniel, and John, her brother Frank and first husband Joseph V. Brown. Funeral Mass on Tuesday at 10 a.m. from St. Mary's Church, 2 N. 8th St., Lebanon. Viewing hours Monday evening from 6-8, with recitation of the Rosary at 7:45 at Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 126 S. 9th St., Lebanon, and Tuesday morning from 910 at the church. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Inter-faith Family Shelter, 1002 Hemlock Drive, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
