George S. Mentzer, 86, of Hearthstone Manor, Lebanon, died Monday, June 1, 2009, in ManorCare Health Services, Lebanon. He was the husband of Catherine Jane Shay Mentzer to whom he was married to for 65 years. Born in Annville on February 10, 1923, he was the son of the late George B. and Elizabeth M. Speraw Mentzer. He was employed as a grocery clerk for 33-plus years at ACME and Food Fair, both in Lebanon. He also served from 1958 to 1960 as a warrant officer for the Civil Air Patrol. George fought in four of the five major battles with the U.S. Army during WW II, serving as a machine gunner in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and other forgotten places. During the Battle of the Bulge, he was wounded and received the Purple Heart as well as the Presidential Unit Citation, the Bronze Star, four Campaign Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He served with the 1st Army under General Bradley, the 3rd Army under General Patton, and the 9th Army under General Simpson. He was honorably discharged from the service, approximately eight months after the surrender of Germany. He was a graduate of Annville High School, a member of the Poet's Society, and a published author who wrote over 900 poems. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, George F. Mentzer, husband of Suzanne Berger of Schaefferstown, Carl S. Mentzer, husband of Karen Peters of Manheim, and a daughter Kay Jayne, wife of Daniel Knepp of Mechanicsburg. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Lisa, Joanne, Lauren Megan and Rachel, and a greatgranddaughter Brianna. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Timothy and Erin. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Kreamer Funeral Home and Crematory, Annville, is in charge of arrangements.
