Gayle L. Nowlen, 83, of the Hostetter House at the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, Palmyra, and formerly of Chocolate Avenue, Hershey, and Forge Road, Palmyra, died Monday, January 19, 2009, at the home. Born September 7, 1925, in Carlisle, she was the daughter of the late Clinton D. Line and Dessie (Mentzer) Line Renshaw. She was the widow of Albert H. Nowlen, who died in 1994; and was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Melvin J. Renshaw; and her brother, Carl Line. A graduate of Hershey High School, she retired June 1, 1987, from the Hershey Chocolate Company, and was a member of First Evangelical Congregational Church, Palmyra, where she was a former Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the East Hanover Township Autumn Leaves, Chocolate Workers Union Local 464, and enjoyed reading, word searches, gardening, walking and church. Surviving are her children, A. Richard "Rick" Nowlen (Mary) of Hershey and Sharon N. Lavine, wife of Ernest P. Lavine Jr. of Palmyra; and grandchildren Christopher and Jarrod Lavine, and Janessa and Dustin Nowlen. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 22, 2009, at the DiMatteo Worship Center of the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, 1200 Grubb Street, Palmyra, preceded by a viewing from 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund of the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, 1200 Grubb Street, Palmyra, PA 17078; or to First Evangelical Congregational Church, 55 West Main Street, Palmyra, PA 17078; or to Pinnacle Health Hospice, 2645 North Third Street, Suite 300, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
