Born October 15, 1910, in Mt. Clinton, Virginia, he was a son of the late Hugh Casper and Lulla (Wolfer) Pence. He was the widower of Ethel (Bell) Pence, who died May 5, 1987, and also was preceded in death by brothers Albert Pence and Golden Pence and sister Edna Pence Frank. He was a member of the Palmyra Church of the Brethren. In 1927 A.B. Heatwole brought Markwood to Pennsylvania to work on his farm in East Hanover Township, Dauphin County. Since arriving in Pennsylvania, Mark worked for Joe Pence in Reading, Walter Weaber at the Mt. Wilson sawmill, Harvey and Glenn Smith as a farmhand in Campbelltown, Landis Shoe Factory, Palmyra, and Hershey Abattoir. After retirement, Mark worked on Dr. Hanshaw's farm caring for his horses. Surviving are a brother, Edward Pence of Mt. Clinton, Virginia; nephews Ernest Lee Pence of Elken, Virginia, and George Bell II of Palmyra; and nieces Evelyn Bell Dietz of Palmyra and Ruth Long Rice of Albany, New York. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Buse Funeral Home, 145 North Grant Street, Palmyra, preceded by a viewing from 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Hanoverdale Cemetery, Hummelstown. Memorial contributions may be made to Lebanon County Christian Ministries, 250 South 7th Street, Lebanon, PA 17042; Palmyra Church of the Brethren, 45 North Chestnut Street, Palmyra, PA 17078; or Countryside Christian Community, 200 Bellann Court, Annville, PA 17003.
