Chester (Chet) J. Chester (Chet) Royer, 87, of Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, Palmyra, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2009, at his home. Born in Myerstown, Lebanon County, on January 17, 1922, son of the late Harry B. and Grace I. (King) Royer. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Geraldine Kettering Royer; his daughter, Jeanne, wife of John Kelly; his sister-in-law, Myrna Royer; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and, of course, the Wilhelm extended family. He was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin G. Royer; and a sister, Elisabeth S. Smith. He was a graduate of South Lebanon High School, Class of 1939, and Dunwoody Baking Institute, Minneapolis. He began his baking career in local bakeries, continuing with Federal stores in Ohio and Maryland. In 1952, he and his wife opened Royer's Cake Box in Lebanon, which they owned and operated until his retirement in 1985. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army anti-aircraft infantry in Germany, France and Belgium. He was a member of the Palmyra Church of the Brethren, past board member of the Lebanon Optimist Club, from which he received the 1976 Optimist International Heritage Award, past house manager at the Quentin Riding Club, and member of the Hershey Region AACA, where he enjoyed showing his antique automobiles. He was involved in founding the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, is a member of their Founders' Club, served numerous terms on their board of directors, and, in 2000, received the Annual President's Award for excellence in volunteer service. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at 3 p.m. in the Kreamer Funeral Home and Crematory, 618 E. Main Street, Annville. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Grand View Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 2-3 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home Endowment Fund, 1200 Grubb Road, Palmyra, PA 17078.
