Witcoskie LEBANON George Joseph "Cork" Witcoskie, 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 30, 2009, in the Hospice Unit at VA Medical Center in Lebanon. He was born February 22, 1927, to the late Stanley and Sally Blasko Witcoskie in Coal Township. He was a member of St. Matthews Evangelical Lutheran Church. George was a WWII Marine veteran serving with the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific, mostly in Hawaii. Prior to military service, he worked in the naval shipyard of San Diego primarily as a welder on various submarines. He retired in 1983 from the Lebanon VA Hospital with more than 35 years of service. During the same time period he also worked a second job at other local hospitals; Lebanon Valley General, Good Samaritan Hospital, and Hyman Caplan Pavilion. He was a life member of the Lebanon Veterans of Foreign Wars, Annville Legion, Friendship Fire Co., Lebanon Senior Center, and Northside Civic League. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and was an avid golfer. One of the things he was most proud of was overseeing the maintenance and care of the former 18 hole golf course at the Lebanon VA Hospital. Surviving are son, James L., spouse of Janie Witcoskie of Annville; daughter, Gayle, spouse of Edward Steckbeck of Lebanon; sisters, Audrey Hemerka of Collegeville and Lorraine Schmidt of Flourtown; brothers, Hubert Witcoskie of Shamokin and Leonard Witcoskie of Oley; and grandchildren, Michael Witcoskie of Ewing, N.J., Kate Hannum of Sparta, N.J., and Jason Steckbeck of Lebanon. He was preceded in death by wife, Irene Schlegel Witcoskie on July 13, 1994; grandchild, Becky Lynne Witcoskie in 1997; brothers, Clarence, Albert, Victor, and Robert; and sisters, Gertrude Eckman and Eleanor Ruchko. Viewing is scheduled for Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Christman's Funeral Home, Inc., at 226 Cumberland St., Lebanon. The funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday at St. Matthews Evangelical Lutheran Church, 534 E. Lehman St., Lebanon. Burial will be at Grand View Memorial Park.
