M. shabodeho@aol.com August 13, 2010, 10:21 am Published in Lebanon Daily News on August 12, 2010 Charles Powell Adams Charles Powell Adams PALMYRA Charles Powell Adams, LCDR-USNR, 74, died peacefully at home on Monday, August 9, 2010, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in 1936, in Nashville, Tenn., he grew up in Lakeland, Fla., and graduated from the University of Florida earning a B.A. in history. Admitted to the U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned Ensign, USNR in April 1959 and ordered to the U.S.S. O'Bannon (DDE-450), home ported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. From there he made two Western Pacific Fleet deployments of seven months each. Between these Far East cruises, he met and married Mary Louise Rinde of Fremont, Neb., in 1961. Following his release from active duty he remained in the naval reserve, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After proudly serving the United States Navy, Powell and Mary returned to the University of Florida where Powell earned his BIE in Industrial Engineering. Later he added an MBA from Pennsylvania State University. For over 30 years he was engaged in managerial assignments with Armstrong Cork, Co., Lancaster General Hospital, Cleaver Brooks Inc., and AMP Inc. The last 13 years he served as Executive-inResidence, Professor and Adjunct Professor of Business at Elizabethtown College, Elizabethtown. Throughout his life Powell and Mary were able to travel widely. Europe, Scandinavia, Mexico, Central America, Canada, as well as 48 of the United States each provided special memories. He loved to read and belonged to the Palmyra Book Club for many years. He was devoted to his church, Palm Lutheran, and provided leadership there in many capacities. His family was especially important to him and he spent many special events taking pictures of them as is apparent when you visit his home. Many family members and friends will remember him for the thoughtful thank you notes and letters that he so devotedly wrote in appreciation for their hospitality and/or accomplishments. He is survived by his wife of 49 years and their two sons and their families, Stuart J. Adams and his wife, Jacky, and their children, Caroline, Emily, and Juliet of Andover, Mass., and Steven J, Adams, Esq. and his wife, Kay, and their children, Katie and Elena of Wyomissing. A memorial service will be held Monday, August 16, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Palm Lutheran Church, 11 W. Cherry St., Palmyra, with the Rev. Dr. John D. Merkel officiating. Burial with full military honors in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, will precede the memorial service at 9:30 a.m. Family and friends are invited for a period of food and fellowship immediately following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall. Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 W. Pine St., Palmyra, has been entrusted with the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Palm Lutheran Church.
