M. shabodeho@aol.com September 24, 2010, 5:45 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on September 19, 2010 Barbara Ann Barry ANNVILLE Barbara Ann Barry, 74, formerly of Lebanon, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 15, 2010, in Hershey Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born June 18, 1936, in Green County, the daughter of the late Ralph and Georgeina Furman. In 1956 she married her college sweetheart, Edward Barry, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Gene, husband of Lorraine Barry of Palmyra, and Doug, husband of Bonny Barry of Harrisburg; and her grandchildren, Brian and Nicole Barry. She graduated from Mapletown High School in 1954 as class Valedictorian, and was a varsity cheerleader for four years. She was a former Wool Queen Princess of Green County and a member of the Homecoming Court at Waynesburg College. She graduated with an Elementary Education Degree from Waynesburg College in 1958, where she attended on an Academic Scholarship, and received a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Penn State University and Millersville State University. Mrs. Barry was a member of Lodge 115 Eastern Star, White Shrine of Jerusalem, and Order of Amaranth. She was also a former member of The NEA, PSEA, PSAR, OPTI, and Mrs. Club of Lebanon. She was a former chairperson of several science fairs in Lebanon, Clearfield, and Centre Counties. She also chaired several educational committees and taught for seven years in Greene, Warren, and Centre Counties, plus 31 years at Harding Elementary in Lebanon, where she taught 4th grade and was affectionately known as "Mrs. Barbara B." She loved her students and sent many confident and successful young men and women into the real world. She retired in 2002. She also taught summer school at Millersville State University and taught Elementary Teaching Techniques at several Central Pennsylvania School Districts. She was Lebanon High cheerleader advisor in the late 1970's and early 1980's and was an active volunteer at Kaplan Pavilion and Good Samaritan Hospital. She and her husband were noted for their generosity to the Good Samaritan Hospital, Hershey Medical Center, and Geisinger Medical Center. She received the 1991 and 1992 Gift of Time Tributes from the American Family Institute at Valley Forge for outstanding teaching attributes. Her favorite sports teams were those coached by her husband, played on by her sons and grandchildren, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates, and Panthers. She lived life to the fullest and will be missed by her family, former students, colleagues, and friends. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Humane Society of Lebanon County, 150 N. Ramona Road, Myerstown, PA 17067.
