Britz CHINO VALLEY, AZ Long time resident of Chino Valley, Ariz., Ida May (Berger) Britz died Saturday, August 28, 2010, at the Bob Stump VA Medical Center in Prescott, Ariz. She was 93. Ida was born in Egan, Ill., to Cora and Calvin Berger on May 26, 1917. The family moved to eastern Pennsylvania when she was a young child to be closer to her mother's family near Lebanon. She grew up on a farm near Schaefferstown and left home at the age of 15 to work as a housekeeper. In 1944 she joined the Women's Army Corps and became part of the Army Air Force. In 1948 she was among the first women to transfer to the newly formed Women's Air Force. She achieved the rank of staff sergeant. On June 10, 1950, she married Daniel Thomas Britz, a sergeant in the U.S.A.F. at Valley Forge. As a military couple, they lived in a number of places including Langley AFB in Virginia; Homestead AFB in Florida; Turner AFB in Georgia; Nouasseur AFB in Morocco; and Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson, Ariz. After Daniel retired from the Air Force in 1965, Ida worked in the food service industry for the Sunnyside School District in Tucson, and later for the University of Arizona. In 1987 she and Dan moved to Chino Valley where she became active in the Meals on Wheels program at the Chino Valley Senior Citizen's Center and they traveled extensively. She had many interests including traveling, cooking, gardening, and caring for her beloved dogs, Timmy and Cholla. Mrs. Britz was preceded in death by a son, Michael in 1995. She is survived by her husband, Daniel of Prescott, Ariz.; her son, Kevin, and daughter-in-law, Kate of Durango, Colo.; grandchildren, Emma Britz of Washington, D.C.and Madalyn Britz of Columbus, Ohio; her brother, Charles and his wife, Helen of Schaefferstown; her cousin, Grace Bare, and several nieces and nephews who reside in eastern Pennsylvania. Cremation has occurred. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 18, at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
