Custer HERSHEY "He is a special man who knows the strength of gentleness, who gives the gift of thoughtfulness, who lives a life of kindness and of love." David L. Custer, formerly of Palmyra, beloved husband and father, entered eternal rest on Thursday, June 17, 2010. Born in Johnstown, on December 14, 1933, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Frieda (Goebert) Custer. David is survived by his best friend and wife of 47 years, Elizabeth; his devoted son, Richard of Washington, D.C.; brother, Calvin and wife, Fae of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; nephews, Paul and wife, Faith, Ted and wife, Lucinda, and Tom and wife, Lucinda; and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William. He was a 1951 graduate of Richland Twp. High School in Geistown. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War, and earned a diploma from the U.S. Army Language School, Monterey, Calif. He graduated in 1962 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and pursued further studies at Penn State University. He retired with 25 years of service from Penn State Hershey Medical Center, where he was manager of the Research Computer Facility in the College of Medicine. David was an avid golfer, and for many years he was a member of and statistician for the Fort Brown Golf League. With his wife, he also enjoyed ballroom dancing, and was a faithful fan of Penn State football. He was a member of the American Legion Post 386, Hershey, the Hershey Italian Lodge, and the Family Athletic Center of Hershey. A Lutheran by faith, he attended St. Ann Byzantine Catholic Church, Harrisburg, with his family. Friends will be received at Hoover Funeral Home, Rt. 422 and Lucy Ave., Hershey, on Monday, June 21, from 7 to 8 p.m., with parastas (wake service) to begin at 8 p.m., with the Rev. Fathers Leonard Martin, S.J., and James Badeaux, celebrants. A brief service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with interment at Hershey Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Ann Byzantine Catholic Church, 5408 Locust Lane, Harrisburg, PA 17109-5598.
