Engle, formerly of Campbelltown, died Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at Messiah Village, Mechanicsburg. He was born in Newtown, Rapho Township, Lancaster County, on September 26, 1913, the son of Mary (Hoffman) and Edgar Engle. After his father died in 1918, he lived with his aunt and uncle Lottie (Hoffman) and Abraham Engle near Bainbridge. John attended Messiah Bible College (1932-1934) and graduated from Elizabethtown College in 1936. He married Anna Ruth Kreider on August 10, 1937, and they had been married 65 years when she died in 2002. They lived in or near Campbelltown, for most of their married life and moved to Messiah Village in 1985. He taught German at Messiah College for seven years, and worked at The Continental Press in Elizabethtown for twenty-six years. He was active in the Palmyra Brethren in Christ Church, where he taught Sunday School and served with Anna as a deacon couple. He served on the Palmyra School Board for sixteen years. He had a strong interest in the history of the Engle Family research genealogy with his sons at the Engles' ancestral home in Röthenbach, Switzerland. He loved to garden and passed along his knowledge of the natural world to his children and grandchildren. John and Anna worked as volunteers at Kenbrook Bible Camp and Messiah Village for many years, and loved hosting family reunions at Kenbrook. John will be lovingly missed by his sister, Alma, and his brother, Harold, and by his six children and their spouses: John and Ruth Engle of Waterville, ME; James and Peg Engle of Harrisonburg, Va.; Marilyn and Jack Wolgemuth of Lancaster; Joanne and Lewis Miller of Roswell, Ga.; Eugene and Ann Engle of Manheim; and Richard and Donna Engle of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and also by his 22 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marion Engle; his brother, Paul Engle; and his granddaughter, Brenna Engle. A memorial service will be held at the Messiah Village Chapel on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., with a visitation from 9:30 to 10:30. Interment will be at the United Christian Cemetery in Campbelltown at 2:30. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Messiah Village Endowment Fund, 100 Mt. Allen Dr., Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; or the Brenna Foundation, 3 Albert Rd., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
