Giffin RICHLAND Donald Michael "Doc" Giffin, 60, passed away at home near Richland early Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 25, 2010, after a long struggle with heart disease and diabetes. His brother, Thomas, was with him at his passing. Donald was born at home in Wintersville, on October 26, 1950, to Ewart and Audrey (Seitzinger) Giffin. He attended the one room schoolhouse in Mt. Aetna and enjoyed reunions there each year. Affectionately known as "Doc", he was never a husband or father, but always a favorite Uncle. He loved kids, and barely was more than one himself most days, choosing to tease and prod and make us all laugh. There was never a more caring, "there for you" guy. He was the "brother to call"...and the "one to count on" to come to the rescue of brothers or sisters, and to do the best he could for family, friends, and co- workers. He was a genuine "one of a kind", who will be sadly missed. Surviving "Doc" are his mother, Audrey I. Giffin of Womelsdorf; siblings, Judith E. Wealand of Lebanon, John E. Giffin of Leesport, Thomas R. Giffin of Richland, Debra A. Giffin of Lancaster, Michael J. Giffin of Hummelstown, Kathleen Spencer of Womelsdorf, Randall E. Giffin of Blandon, and Sandra Y. Giffin of Reinholds; 14 nieces and nephews; and many grandnieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by niece, Anne Giffin, and nephew, Paul E. Dietrich. Donald served two years in the U.S. Army in Fort Dix, N.J., as a cook, and carried those skills on to the enjoyment of his family. He was an avid hunter and amazing mechanic, who taught himself to read and to use blueprints and technical drawings at his work. He was proud of his work at Weaver Star Silos, Lebanon Steel Foundry, Caldwell Tanks, and most recently at Precision Metal Technologies. He belonged to R Field and Stream, Lebanon Valley Sportsmen Club, Strausstown Rod and Gun, and various other unions across the country when he traveled for work. He enjoyed reading, science fiction movies, poker games, riding his motorcycle, working on cars, and spending time with family and friends. He saw the sky and started walking..... A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, December 4, 2010, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Country Fare Restaurant Garden Cottage in Myerstown.
