Elizabeth Groover LEBANON Cynthia Elizabeth 'Libby' Groover, 97, died peacefully in her sleep, March 14, 2010. Born in Grafton, W.Va., October 21, 1912, to Floyd and Bessie Hertzog, she worked as a youngster in her father's general store where she said she learned the invaluable life lessons of learning the proper way to scoop ice cream and how to make change. After her family moved to Clairton, she graduated from Clairton High School in 1930. When her family moved to Lewisburg, she met Robert W. Groover, an engineering student at Bucknell University, who courted her in his handmade sailing canoe on the Susquehanna River. Because students weren't allowed to be married, the couple eloped, with their families' blessing, to Leesburg, Va., and married July 12, 1937. Upon Robert's graduation, the couple moved in 1939 to Lebanon, where he was hired by Bethlehem Steel, in whose employ he remained for forty years, retiring as General Manager in 1980. He died July 3, 1987. Libby was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and a Life Member of Chapter 115, Order of the Eastern Star. Elizabeth is survived by a sister, Mary Rowe of Lewisburg; and three sons, Robert Donald and wife, Peggy, Pittsburgh, Michael Allen and wife, Donna and granddaughter, Elizabeth, Barrington, N.H., and David Lee and partner, C.C. Conner, Houston, Texa.. Until her death, she still enjoyed the New York Times crossword puzzle, an English countryside murder mystery, and any televised golf game. The family would like to thank Ellen Patches for her unceasing daytime companionship and hearty breakfasts for Elizabeth in the last year. Services will be private and held at a later date in Lewisburg. Contributions in Elizabeth's memory may be made to the Mt. Gretna Volunteer Fire Company, Mt. Gretna, PA., 17064.
