M. shabodeho@aol.com July 4, 2010, 4:03 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on July 1, 2010 Harold "Haps" Houser Sr. Harold Houser, Sr. LEBANON Harold "Haps" Houser, Sr., 90, died Wednesday, June 30, 2010, in the Veteran's Administration Hospital Hospice Center. He was the husband of Gladys Starry Houser. He was born on November 1, 1919, in Newmanstown. He was the son of the late Charles and Sally Clay Houser. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and husband. Harold and his wife, Gladys, celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary on June 18, 2010. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, including in the battle of Iwo Jima. After being honorably discharged in 1945, Harold returned to Lebanon, working as a bus driver for Indiantown Gap, transporting soldiers to and from leave. He spent more than 30 years of his life working as a truck driver for several local businesses, including Diamond Bros. of Reading, Ma's Root Beer of Lebanon, Whitmore Laboratories of Myerstown, DuPont of Wilmington, Del., and finally, Hartman's Transportation, which is now Jones Motors. He also worked for the Lebanon Steel Foundry. In 1975, he founded Houser's Lawn Service, which continues to be owned and operated by his son, David. After retiring from Jones Motors, he continued to stay active by driving for even more local businesses including LebArnold, Lebanon Valley General Hospital, Kapp Advertising, Manheim Auto Auction, and Frederick Chevrolet. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved music, singing and dancing. He was a rich source of WWII history. Harold was a member of the VFW and Legion for many years. He led a full wonderful life and will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Harold Houser, Jr. and companion, Mary Carter of Perry, Fla., Sallyann, wife of Antonio Suarez of Mt. Joy, Louise, wife of Joseph Simpson of Staunton, Va., Evelyn Houser of Lebanon, and David B. Houser and wife, Sue Ann of Cleona; six grandchildren; and 12 greatgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Rohland Funeral Home, 508 Cumberland St., Lebanon, where a viewing take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Private interment will be made at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lebanon VA Hospice Unit, 1700 S.
