Kern, 88, went to be with his Lord on Monday, June 14, 2010, at the Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born July 19, 1921, in Bunker Hill, he was the son of the late Martin Luther and Kathryn Groy Kern. For most of his life he was employed in construction and at sand and stone quarries including those in Annville and Bunker Hill. A dedicated employee, he worked from 1961 until he retired in 1989 at Mt. Cydonia Sand, a division of Valley Quarries, where he served in the capacity of plant superintendant In his retirement he enjoyed gardening and cutting wood for the fireplace. In addition he was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan and enjoyed collecting caps, and being actively involved in various leadership roles within the churches he attended including Hope Reformed Presbyterian church, where he was a faithful member for the last 20 years. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Ruby Fern Allison Kern, whom he married on May 25, 1940; his children: Jay Kern (wife Debra) of Hughesville, Md., and Melody Hill (husband Phillip) of Gettysburg; 10 grandchildren; 22 greatgrandchildren; and two siblings, Henry W. Kern of Bunker Hill and Ethel Peiffer of Erie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Rev. Kenneth Kern and his wife, the late Faith Kern; a daughter-in-law, Karen Kern; and two siblings, James G. and Ralph E. Kern. Funeral Services will be held at the Hope Reformed Presbyterian Church, 123 Walnut Bottom Rd., Shippensburg, on Friday at 10 a.m. where the Rev. Dr. David Fidati will officiate. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Interment will follow in Grandview Memorial Park, Cleona, at 2 p.m. If desired contributions may be made in his name to the Salvation Army, 159 Lincoln Way W. Chambersburg, PA 17201.
