Lane LEBANON His Last Patrol: On Friday, February 26, 2010, Charles Henry Lane, 60, fell in the battle of cancer at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. A 1967 graduate of Lebanon Catholic High, he was the son of the late Edmund M. and Mildred C. (Potteiger) Lane. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn K. Lane; stepson, Justin Confer, Washington, D.C.; sisters, Mildred Bonelli of Glasgow, N.Y. and Caroline Keiser of Lebanon; brothers, Edmund P. of Findley, Ohio, and Walter Saugerties of New York; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Agnes Waibel, Hershey, Margaret Conrad, Lebanon, Delores Leeper, Lickdale, and Elizabeth Wenrich, Fredericksburg. He was most recently employed by Delstar in Richland. After being unemployed and becoming increasingly ill, he retired in September 2009. A military veteran, Charles served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1972. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served from 1972 to 1980, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. Tours of duty in both branches included, among others, Korea, Germany, Italy, and he served a short time in Vietnam while in transition of duty. He was also stationed at Air Force bases throughout the United States. Charles, named Gray Bear, was active in the Native American culture. He and his wife regularly attended Native American pow-wows and festivals in the region. He was the Master of Ceremonies of the Swift Horse Woman Native American Festival held annually in Mt. Aetna, and helped organize the Native American Healing Gathering held annually at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. The Mt. Aetna Festival and the VA Healing Gathering are both veteran associated events. He was a member of the Project Welcome Home Committee which brought the Vietnam Moving Wall to Lebanon in 1995, and the construction of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Fisher Veterans Park in 1997. He became the Chairman of the newly formed Project Welcome Home in 2007 for the tenth anniversary rededication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. He stepped down as chairman of the organization in 2008. In early 2009, project Welcome Home became a member organization of the Lebanon Veterans Advisory council, where in November 2009, he was elected Vice President. He would become the acting President in December 2009. He was also the Chairman, and organized the 2009 Veterans Day Program at Fisher Veterans Park. Charles will be interred at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with full military honors.
