Long, 96, died Saturday, March 6, 2010, in Spang Crest Manor, Lebanon. He was the husband of the late Velma Sommers Long, who died in 2008. Born December 16, 1913, in Lebanon, he was the son of the late John D. Long and the late Jennie Kohr Long. His father was the owner of Long's Pretzel Bakery of Lebanon. He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1931, Lebanon Valley College in 1935, and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1939. After serving a Surgical Internship at Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia, he was a Resident Surgeon at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Upon entering the Navy, he first served in the Ophthalmology Department at Philadelphia Naval Hospital. He was then assigned as Ophthalmologist to the U.S.S. Refuge Naval Hospital Ship for a tour of 22 months in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of Operation. His final tour of duty was at Bethesda Naval Hospital. After returning to Lebanon, he opened an office as the first Board Certified Ophthalmologist to practice medicine at Lebanon's Good Samaritan Hospital, the former Lebanon Sanatorium, and as a consultant to the Lebanon Veteran's Administration Hospital. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Pennsylvania EENT Society, and served as a President of the Staff of the Good Samaritan Hospital and of the Lebanon County Medical Society. He served as a member of the Board of the Lebanon County Trust Company from 1969 until its merger with the CoreStates Financial Corporation, and was a member of the City of Lebanon's original Planning Commission. He served as a member of the Building Committee of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #226, the Lebanon Country Club, and the Quentin Riding Club. After retiring from active practice in July 1982, he and his wife traveled frequently and spent most of their winters in Phoenix, Ariz., and Hilton Head Island, S.C. He was an avid golfer, skier, and tennis player. Surviving are two sons, Theodore K. Long, Jr. and wife, Antonia Kury of Allentown, Attorney Thomas S. Long and wife, Patricia Shay of Lebanon; a daughter, Betsy L. Rebol of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and 10 greatgrandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Luther K. Long and Dr. Robert K. Long; and a son-inlaw, John A. Rebol. He wishes to be remembered by his friends as they last knew him and has requested a private family burial.
