Martel, Sr., 90, of 505 Noble St., passed away Friday, April 2, 2010, in the Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon. He was the husband of Helen I. Eggert Martel, who died in 2009. Born in Lebanon, on August 31, 1919, he was a son of the late George and Elizabeth R. Knoll Martel. He was a retired employee of the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. with 40 years of service. He was a 1938 graduate of Lebanon Catholic High School. He was an Army veteran of WWII, where he was stationed in England as a Medical Technician. He was a member of The World Wide Church of God and the Friendship Fire Co. He enjoyed gardening, riding his bike around the neighborhood visiting friends, woodworking, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Surviving are seven children, Kathleen, wife of Danny McDonald of New Albany, Miss., Suzanne McMurtrie of Hellertown, Jean, wife of Joseph Engle of Lebanon, Michelle, wife of James Fiorentino of Lebanon, James C. Martel, Jr. of Lebanon, Mary Frances, wife of William Shaak of Myerstown, and Anne, wife of Gordon Shutter of Rexmont; 14 grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; two brothers, George Martel of Tennessee and William Martel of Lebanon; three sisters, Rita Hain of Fredericksburg, Theresa Howard of South Carolina, and Barbara Martel of Lebanon; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Richard, Leo, Frederick, Louis, Robert, and Tom Martel; and four sisters, Mary Jane Leibich, Margaret Eby, Josephine Flashel, and Cecilia Bowman. Funeral services on Wednesday at 10 a.m. from Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 126 S. 9th St., Lebanon, 17042. Interment on Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Viewing hours Wednesday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lebanon Catholic School, 1400 Chestnut St., Lebanon, PA 17042.
