M. shabodeho@aol.com November 16, 2010, 8:28 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on November 15, 2010 Ernest E. Miller LONGMONT, CO Ernest E. Miller died October 31, 2010, at Longmont United Hospital. Ernie was born September 4, 1919, in Lancaster. He married Magdalena Landis on June 3, 1938 who predeceased him on August 14, 2004. He was also predeceased by his parents, Christian and Lina Miller; brothers, Lew Miller and Emerson Miller; sister, Pearl Stryker; granddaughter, Carol Jo Hayes; and grandson, John Jordan. He is survived by his six children, Robert (Bobby) Miller of Littleton, Colo., Arnold (Fay) Miller of Myerstown, Christian (Janet) Miller of Arvada, Colo., Dan (Cathy) Hayes of Greeneville, Tenn., Carroll Joy (Orrin) Applen of Longmont, Colo., and Carolyn Champagne of Picayune, Miss. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren who he prayed for daily. On January 31, 1944, Ernie enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps (later U.S.A.F.) and served in various assignments, mostly specialized training as an airborne radio operator and was assigned to the 5th Air Rescue Wing with orders to the Pacific Theatre when the war ended. On Dec 17, 1945, Ernie was flying in a B-17 Flying Fortress training mission with twelve other crewmen when the plane crashed with only five survivors. He pulled two of the men to safety and was later awarded the Soldier's Medal. In 1955, Ernest was appointed Chief Warrant Officer, U.S.A.F. From 1962-1963, he served in Vietnam and while there, Ernest accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior. He retired from the U.S.A.F. in 1968 and began a new career as broker manager of Ernest Miller Realty and Insurance and also served as the acting president of The Gideons International of Colo. From 1977-1978, Ernest served as Executive Director of Christian Military Fellowship. Ernie and Maggie became a ministry team as they traveled to military installations all over the world to promote the idea of CMF, organizing local chapters. Ernest spent his final days at The Regent of Longmont where he held a Bible study until he was ninety. He was a blessing to all he knew him. It was Ernie's wish that contributions may be made to The Gideons International and to Christian Military Fellowship. Internment was at Fort Logan Cemetery at 9:15, Thursday, November 4, 2010, followed by Memorial services at Calvary Church of Longmont at 11 a.m. The family wishes to thank Longmont United Hospital nurses and doctors for their compassionate care of our father and a special thanks to Stephanie who gave such good care as a Senior Helper during Dad's last month.
