Zellers BRYN MAWR/OCEAN CITY, NJ Richard J "Dick" Zellers, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 1, 2010. Dick Zellers was born on December 5, 1920, to the late Charles J. Zellers and Luella Deitrich Zellers of Lebanon. Dick attended Lebanon High School where he was a stand out athlete. He earned his varsity letters in three sports: football, basketball, and track. In 1938, when Dick graduated from high school, the Lebanon Daily News noted his exceptional athleticism in an article that stated, "his specialty is speed." Dick continued to specialize in speed when he attended The Peddie School in 1939, where he focused his athletic energy on football and track, becoming a star sprinter in the latter. Dick was accepted into Muhlenberg College in 1939, where he majored in Business and Accounting. In addition to his academic pursuits, Dick continued to excel as a competitive runner. He devoted his time to varsity track, racing in the quarter mile and the shorter dashes. Dick also pursued other interests during college, becoming a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and serving as their treasurer. In 1942, while still attending Muhlenberg, Dick was sworn into the Naval Reserves and after his college graduation he attended Columbia University's Midshipman School. In the fall of 1943, after graduating from Midshipman School, Dick married his high school sweetheart, Grace E. Smith, then entered into active duty as a Naval Officer. Lieutenant Zellers served his country during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific as a communications and navigation officer on the U.S.S. Alvin C. Cockrell from 1943 to 1946. In 1945, Dick's crew was sent as a part of the response effort after the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, and Dick continued to serve in the Naval Reserves until he honorably retired from the service in 1953. Dick and Grace moved to Delaware County in 1946 and welcomed two daughters into their lives, Christie in 1949 and Robin in 1955. Dick brought the same dedication and drive to his career that he had to his academic, athletic, and military life. He worked for seven years as an accountant with American Meter Co., then joined Philadelphia Manufacturers Mutual Insurance Co. in 1952. At that time Dick embarked on what would become a 31 year journey with this company, beginning as a controller and soon advancing to the position of treasurer. By the time that Dick retired in 1983, he had moved through the company ranks to attain the position of Senior Vice President of Finance. In 1968 Dick married his second wife, Rose P. Wolf, and they resided in Bryn Mawr, before moving to Ocean City, N.J., in 1983. Dick and Rose enjoyed traveling and spent part of their winters in Florida each year. When he wasn't traveling, Dick took pleasure from living in Ocean City and doing what he loved the most: swimming in the ocean and local pool, woodworking, playing cards with family and friends, gardening, watching sports, and spending time with his grandchildren. Dick is survived by his wife of 41 years, Rose; his daughters, Christie Fritsch and Robin Garrity (Ken); stepsons, George Dennis, Thomas E. (Deborah) and Steven P. Wolf; eight grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at The Nevil Memorial Church of St. George, Darby Road and Ardmore Ave., Ardmore , PA 19003. Memorials can be sent to St. George's Memorial Garden Fund, c/o Robin Garrity using above address. Arrangements are by the D'Anjolell Memorial Home.
