Allwein, 91, formerly of the Cardinal House, Arlington, Va., died Sunday, June 5, 2011 of natural causes at St. Anne's Retirement Community in Columbia. Born in Lebanon on April 19, 1920, Joseph was a son of the late Paul A. and Annie L. (Shay) Allwein. Joseph was a retired Finance Officer with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) where he served for over 30 years at various domestic and overseas locations. Upon his retirement, from the CIA, he was awarded the Career Intelligence Medal. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1951 and was also a graduate from Lebanon Catholic High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II with the 77th Infantry Division in Guam, Leyte, and Le Shima, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was an avid reader. He is survived by a brother, Robert A. Allwein of Allentown; three sisters, Sr. Ann Louise Allwein of Columbia, Mary Sattazahn of Lebanon, and Clare Barbini of Norfolk, Va.. Many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Paul, Herman, James, Pierce, and John and one sister, Sr. Helen Allwein. Funeral Mass Thursday at 10 a.m. from St. Mary's Church, 2 N 8th St., Lebanon. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation Thursday 9 to 10 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sisters of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, St. Joseph's Convent. Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., is entrusted with the arrangements.
