M. shabodeho@aol.com April 16, 2011, 2:15 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on April 13, 2011 John R. Bear LITITZ John R. Bear, 80, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning, April 9, 2011. John (Dick) was the husband of Sally Staudt Bear to whom he was married for 47 years. Born in Ephrata on September 20, 1930, John was the son of Jacob B. and E. Elizabeth Bender Bear. He graduated from Ephrata High School, Class of 1948. In 1952, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Bachelor of Applied Arts. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Phi Delta fraternities. He continued his studies at the University of Colorado and Franklin & Marshall College, and later earned his Masters of Education degree from Millersville University. Upon graduation from college, John joined the Mosaic Tile Company in Zanesville, Ohio as a designer until he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served as a Staff Sergeant in the 2nd Army during the Korean War. Teaching 5th and 6th grades at Churchtown Elementary School in Carnarvon Township, John began his long career in education in 1955, including two short stints in Upper Leacock Elementary School and Schaeffer Elementary School, Manheim Township before heading overseas. In 1958, John was invited to teach the children of U.S. Officers in American Independent Schools at Kadena Air Force Base, Okinawa. He later returned to Manheim Township School District where he taught Junior High and Elementary Art at Neff, Schaeffer, Brecht, Nitrauer, and Bucher schools until he retired in 1985. John was also President of the Manheim Township Education Association where he negotiated the first teachers' contract for the district. From 1977 to 2005, John worked for Anthony & Sylvan Pools where he became Area Sales Manager and developed and oversaw the Central PA pool division. He was recognized annually as one of their top ten salesmen in the U.S. John will be deeply missed by his entire family. Surviving, in addition to John's wife, are two sons and four grandchildren. State Representative John C. Bear, husband of Roberta (Bobbi) Crownover Bear and their son, John (Jack) R. and daughter, Brynn E. Bear; and David M. Bear, husband of Andrea Steffy Bear and their two sons, Matthew D. and Andrew C. Bear. John is a member of St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Mount Joy American Legion and numerous historical organizations. Many happy memories are of John and his family spending time together in their Mount Gretna cottage. In keeping with his love for this special place in the woods, relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend John's Life Celebration Service at the Mt.
