Bissinger, Ph.D, 93, passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2011, in The Middletown Home, Middletown. Born on January 27, 1918, in Lancaster, he was preceded in death by his parents, John B. and Marian Killian Bissinger. A lifelong educator, he was instrumental in developing mathematics courses for Penn State Harrisburg, where he retired from teaching in 1988. He was the former head of the Mathematics Department at Lebanon Valley College, where he received the John Evans Lehman Chair of Mathematics in 1959. A native of Lancaster, Dr. Bissinger graduated from Franklin and Marshall College and received his master's degree from Syracuse University. In 1943, he was awarded one of the first interdisciplinary doctorates - in mathematics and aerodynamics - by Cornell University. He was a member of 23 learned societies and held associate actuary status in the Society of Actuaries. He began teaching mathematics at Cornell and Michigan State University and served as a research assistant for the National Research Council at Columbia University prior to his appointment as operations analyst for the Fourteenth Air Force at the Pentagon and in the China Theatre during World War II. He and a small team of analysts recruited from other universities were special advisors to Claire Chennault's Flying Tigers. The group performed calculations to assist aircraft through the China-Burma-India hump. After the war, he served as executive vice president of a family shoe manufacturing corporation in Fitchburg, Mass., before joining the faculty of Lebanon Valley in 1953 and ultimately Penn State Harrisburg. Active in work for the National Science Foundation, he served as a Foundation Fellow at Princeton University during the late 1950's and ran the Visiting Lecturers Program for five years. In 1998, he retired as consulting statistician to the Mechanicsburg Naval Supply Depot after 38 years of service. He had provided similar consulting services to Hershey Foods Corporation and Gannett Fleming, Inc. through that time period. Dr. Bissinger is survived by his wife, Esther McGeehan Bissinger of Hershey; three daughters, Gail Garman and husband, Earl of Newmanstown, Karen Steinrock and husband, Greg of Grantham, and Sally Costello and husband, Mike of Rockport, Mass.; a son, Steven Bissinger and wife, Trudi of Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four stepchildren; and seven step grandchildren. Per his wishes, Dr. Bissinger's remains have been donated to Humanity Gifts Registry for medical research at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. A Celebration of Life for Dr. Bissinger will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 7 p.m. in Wiedeman Funeral Home, 357 S. Second St., Steelton. A visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
