Bligan, 85, passed away Friday, September 2, 2011, in Tremont Health & Rehab Center, Tremont. Born on August 26, 1926, in Pine Grove, he was a son of the late Irvin and Margaret Long Bligan In 1944 he graduated from Pine Grove High School. He retired from the Lebanon V.A. Hospital after being employed for 33 years as a practical nurse. While there, he started the first union at the Hospital. Elwood was a veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. LST2 and U.S.S. LST 1146 as a signalman 3Cl. He received the European Theater Medal with one star, the Pacific Theater Medal, the American Theater Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Pine Grove. He was a life member of the Pine Grove V.F.W. Post 3432, the Pine Grove American Legion Post 374, and the Pine Grove H.H. & L. Fire Co., #1. For many years he was an ambulance driver in Pine Grove before the Pine Grove Community Association was established. Preceding him in death was his wife of 59 years, Anna M. D'Agostino Bligan. Surviving are one daughter, and son-in-law, Barbara and Donald Schneck of Pine Grove; four grandchildren, Debra Schneck, Dean and wife, Carol Schneck, Trudy, wife of Lyman Witmer, and Timothy and wife, Lisa Schneck, all of Pine Grove; six great-grandchildren; and five great-great- grandchildren. Services will be held at H.L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc., on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Dr. Ira C. Lydic officiating. Interment will follow in the St. John's Lutheran Cemtery, Pine Grove. There will be a viewing on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to time of service at the funeral home.
